Newly-elected DMK president M K Stalin, in a move to scotch speculation over growing ties between his party and the BJP, gave a clarion call to oust the Modi government which wanted to saffronise India and suppress regional languages of the country.
In a hard-hitting speech at the general council meeting after taking over as president of the party, Stalin said the Modi government was trying to paint the saffron colour on every institution of the country. In the interest of democracy and secularism, “we must fight against the Modi government and remove it from power”, he said to the cheers of the general council members.
Stalin said there was grave danger to the concept of secularism, and to the Tamil language and issues like reservation for the scheduled castes and tribes and the backward classes.
The present AIADMK government was only interested in corruption, Stalin said, adding that the day was not far off when this government would be thrown out.
Stalin asked his partymen to work with renewed resolve to implement the ideals of Karunanidhi for which he strove for over eight decades.
Party general secretary K Anbazhagan announced the results of the elections held for the posts of president and treasurer. In the post vacated by Stalin, Durai Murugan, like Stalin, was elected unopposed.
Party functionaries, district secretaries, heads of various wings including Kanimozhi, showered praise on Stalin’s leadership and said he had reached the top position through his hard work, not because he was Karunanidhi’s son.
