Starting this year, vocational education is being introduced as an optional subject for the IX standard students.

With a view of making the students obtain talent-related education along with their normal curriculum, this scheme is being introduced as an experimental measure, in 67 Government Higher Secondary Schools at an expense of Rs 3.55 crores. Government of Tamilnadu has issued an order in this regard.

Accordingly, students can join in 5 vocational streams – Automotive, Electronics & Hardware, Apparels, Made Ups & Home Furnishing, Agriculture, and Beauty & Wellness, as per their choice.

Pandit Sundarlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education that is functioning under the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has designed the curriculum for these vocational courses. The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) will translate these lessons in Tamil and the classes will be conducted with the help of the Department of Industry.

The Directorate of Government Examinations will conduct the exams for the students joining in these Vocational Training Courses and award marks. Further, the National Skill Development Corporation and the Sector Skill Council will jointly issue the certification for the successful completion of the training.

“When higher level education was started in 1978-79, the Vocational Training Courses were begun in the Plus 1 and Plus 2 classes. Prior to that, Vocational Training remained an optional subject in SSLC (11th Standard) course”, says Mr S.N. Janardhan, the General Secretary of the Tamilnadu Higher Secondary School Vocational Education Teachers’ Association.

“This scheme has already been implemented for the past 3 years for the students of IX standard in other states. However, this is being introduced in Tamilnadu only this year, as per the advice of the central government. Students interested in undergoing vocational training can join this course; but this is however not compulsory and will also, in no away affect the other classes. These courses will soon begin in various schools, depending on students joining in such classes in those schools. Separate classes will be conducted for the students joining in these courses, with the help of honorary professors”, he adds.
