Corona was all over the news late 2019 and early 2020 but India didn’t seem to be affected by it at that time. It seemed like a Chinese problem but was being talked about everywhere. Then Europe was in the news. Horror stories were coming out of Italy.

In India, infections were still not very high. Maybe the turmeric we take with dhal, rasam and sambar was helping us fight infection, people hoped.

One of the earliest memes going around at that time wondered if the Chennai heat was too much for the virus. Memes often come infused with self-deprecation. And this one had dollops of it.

One of the earliest memes going around in early 2020 wondered if the Chennai heat was too much for the virus.

But Corona struck India like a predicted tsunami. Yet, in the last two years, memes have tried to ignore the virus. Covid19 was too real, too serious and too much of a threat to be taken down. The virus was not overreaching or pretending to be what it was not. So meme makers stayed away from it, largely. Instead memes dealt with other topics.

Life was normal and let’s laugh at things that we used to laugh at in the past. This was the meme maker’s refrain.

Omicron is upon us now. Scientists tell us that it has too many mutations and close to being a different and probably more dangerous virus than Corona. They say that the vaccine may not prevent infection but hope that the vaccinated have a better chance of fighting the disease since the immune system of the vaccinated would be better.

Omicron is the talk of the town, village and country. It has brought back Covid19 accessories just when they were being dispensed with: lockdowns, social distancing, face masks, vaccination and so on. Governments are making contingency plans if hospitalization and other medical needs ramp up.

Cases have been reported in Bengaluru but none so far in Tamil Nadu. Prayers are on and fingers are staying crossed.

This is not a bad time to laugh at Omicron and what it means. A smile may help us cope and come out on top. And who better than Vadivelu to help us laugh.
