The Tamil Nadu government has rejected DMK’s request to allow Karunanidhi’s body to be buried at the Anna Memorial on Beach Road. Instead, the government said it is ready to allocate two acres of land near Gandhi and Rajaji Memorial on Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Road. The final rites will be accompanied by a 21-gun salute and his body will be draped with the national flag, the government announced.

On Tuesday afternoon, even as Karunanidhi’s health condition became critical, a DMK delegation that included Karunanidhi’s sons M K Alagiri, M K Stalin as well as his daughter Kanimozhi met with chief minister Edappadi Palaniswami and requested that Karunanidhi’s body be kept at Rajaji Hall where the people could pay homage and that later the burial shall take place at Anna Square.

Rejecting the demand regarding the final resting place, the chief minister said there were many legal obstacles involved in it. The government was instead prepared to offer a two-acre plot near Gandhi Memorial, a statement by chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan said.
