Teacher inspires tribal children  

Coming from Pandalur near Gudalur,  Samudra Pandian wanted to be a teacher from a young age

His first posting was Class 1 teacher at a school in Karkudi in Nilgiris in 2000

Located in a Kurumba settlement, the students couldn’t understand Pandian speaking Tamil

He learned Kurumba language and started communicating with them

Soon, students who were disinterested in studies began to be interested

He learned girl students from tribal kattunayakkan community left school after puberty

HE CONVINCED PARENTS TO LET THEM STUDY. PANDIAN ENCOURAGED AND SUPPORTED ALL STUDENTS

They were married off

Six of them are now in Class 12

Pandian encouraged Sita who had talent for singing and she competed in Vijay TV Super Singer

Transferred to Kothagiri tribal school, there too Pandian has been working to educate tribals

He is among three teachers for 100 students

He got two students enrolled in an ISRO programme to teach students space science

They will soon get to participate in a satellite experiment
