“ONE CRORE PALMYRA TREES TO TAMILNADU”
REGREEN CHENNAI INITIATES THE PALMYRA REVIVAL MOVEMENT.
SBOA STUDENTS TO LAUNCH THE PALMYRA NATION CHENNAI CAMPAIGN.
Date : 20th June, Wednesday 11.00 A.M
Venue : SBOA Matric HSS & Junior College, West Anna Nagar.
ReGreen Chennai, initiated by EarthSmiles Trust was a response to the massive green loss caused to Chennai by cyclone Vardah. Last year (2017) we planted 63000 well grown trees.
Considering the water and overall climate charge driven environmental crisis Tamil Nadu faces, the ReGreen Chennai Movement expands to a Tamil Nadu focus with thrust on palmyra tree.
The plan is to plant one crore palmyra trees in five years. Apart from the huge food and nutrition value palmyra has, it can slow down the speed of cyclones, floods and Tsunamis. Palmyra strengthens the bunds of water bodies. It doesn’t need any watering. On the other hand it channelizes the rain water to the below earth water table. Therefore this multifunctional tree is probably best suited for our conditions.
On June 20, Wednesday at 11.00 A.M. 800 students of SBOA Schools & Junior College will plant 800 Palmyra Seeds along the peripheries of the compound, introducing the concept of “URBAN PALMYRA COMPOUND WALLS”. In times of climatic distress such walls will guard the city.
