The crowd that had gathered in front of Sakthi International School in Kaniyamoor of Kallakurichi district on July 17 had probably not known or realized what was going to follow.

Some 30 policemen had been posted. The police had thought that the parents of the girl who had committed suicide, their relatives and a few friends would come for the protest. Suddenly, a mob gathered in front of the school in bikes, three wheelers and cars. Before the police could realize the damage that was happening and respond all the violence was over.

A policeman who has now been posted at the school premises estimates the damage to be Rs 3 crore.

Srimathi, 17, was studying in Class 12. She came from Periyanesalur in Cuddalore district’s Veppur Taluk. Her father is working abroad. Srimathi apparently jumped from the third floor of the school hostel and committed suicide early on July 13.

The parents suspected foul play in the death and complained to the police who registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC that includes death under suspicious circumstances and are investigating it.

The Madras high court has said that the Kallakurichi violence on July 17 did not appear to be the outcome of a people’s protest but a well planned attack. The court has ordered the police to investigate and find out who perpetrated the violence and make them answerable to law.

Some 900 policemen have been stationed at Kaniyamoor. The entire Taluk – Chinna Salem – is under Section 144.

For the second day, on Monday, Director General of Police Sylendra Babu among senior officials are camping there to ensure security.

What has emerged is the lack of a close relationship between the school and the local community. What also did not help was that local interests were not patronized during admissions. “Whether ruling party or opposition party, no one could enter the school recommending admissions for the constituents of party workers and leaders,” says S Baskar, a social activist in Kallakurichi.

Baskar said the school management were perceived to have links with the RSS. He said an RSS Shaka session had happened in the school playground recently. He said scores may have sought to be settled by those who unleashed the violence.

Government doctors sought to tamp down fears that the injuries found in the school girl’s body had occurred before her fall. This had led to suspicion among people’s minds. The doctors said the injuries were likely caused during the fall. And the post mortem did not show signs of sexual assault. Doctors are waiting for the toxicology report to conclude the cause of death.

The school principal, correspondent and secretary as well as a chemistry teacher and a maths teacher have been arrested by the police. It does appear that anti-socials took advantage of a protest over a school girl’s death and unleashed mayhem at Kaniyamoor.

Ministers Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, EV Velu and Ganesan who visited the place faulted mischief makers who wanted to give a bad name to the government as being behind the violence.
