D Ilakkiya, who studied at the Elite School initiated by former Ramanathapuram collector K Nandakumar, is now a doctor after scoring 100% in three subjects in Class 12. Elite school is a special government school for high performers in Ramanathapuram.
Ilakkiya’s father Dhakshinamoorthy runs a courier service shop in Sayalkudi, Ramanathapuram. Her mother Shanthi is a homemaker. Ilakkiya studied in Sayalkudi government high school from Class 6 to Class 10 in Tamil medium. She scored 484 out of 500 in SSLC, with 100% score in science.
When she was in school, she didn’t go for any coaching classes. She would absorb whatever was being taught in school and do self-study at home. Her high scores in Class 10 helped her get admission in the Elite School. Ilakkiya felt studying in that school would help her do well in Class 12.
Ilakkiya took maths, physics, chemistry and biology. Instead of staying at the school hostel, she stayed with her aunt and studied as a day scholar. She was given special permission to be a day scholar.
Ilakkiya is thankful to Elite School coordinator Navaneethakrishnan who took care of the students. Students could approach teachers whenever they had questions. The teachers were quite keen that all students did well. Collector Nandakumar would visit every week and boost the confidence of the students.

In 2016, Ilakkiya scored 1,158 marks out of 1,200. On top of this, Ilakkiya scored 200 out of 200 in maths, chemistry and biology. She scored 194 out of 200 in physics. There was no entrance test that year for MBBS. Her cut off was 198.5.
Ilakkiya could have got admission in Madras Medical College with those marks but she chose Madurai Medical College since it was closer home.
Ilakkiya’s brother had taken a bank loan and studied medicine. So her family was wondering how they were going to pay for her medical education. Then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa came in support by paying her first year expenses through her party funds. For the next year, that support was not available since she had died.
Ilakkiya had trouble in the first six months of her MBBS course since she had studied in Tamil medium. She would ask her classmates for help and they would generously help her out. Now Ilakkiya is doing her internship, which is getting over on May 18.
For second and third year, Rani Foundation supported her education. For the fourth year, the AIADMK trust again chipped in.
Ilakkiya had trouble in the first six months of her MBBS course since she had studied in Tamil medium. She would ask her classmates for help and they would generously help her out. Now Ilakkiya is doing her internship, which is getting over on May 18.
Ilakkiya wants to join government health service through medical recruitment board. Her wish is to serve in Sayalkudi.
Ilakkiya plans to pursue PG in anesthesiology.
