The supplementary examination held in the months of September and October for 10th and 12th standards in Tamilnadu has been cancelled from the academic year 2019-20, Directorate of State Examination has announced.

Starting next year, the September-supplementary-examination, being conducted since 1952, is coming to an end. Also, from the next academic year, it is planned to hold only the public examination of March-April and a special supplementary examination in June-July. This will reduce the re-exam writing opportunities available to students failing in the main examination and to the private students, from 3 to 2.

“Once the results of the public exam held in March-April are announced, the activities for organizing the special supplementary exam in June-July will begin, and after this is held as scheduled, the entire process will get completed in August. Then the preparatory work for the term-examination in September and October will follow, and after its completion, all the exam–related tasks will get over by end November. Activities related to the March public examination, like identifying new test centres and making them ready, and preparing the name-list will begin even in August.

“Students who fail in the March-April annual examination will have to face their re-examination immediately within a few months, if they are not successful in this too, they will have no option but to wait till next March” says Prince Gajendra Babu.

The teachers and authorities are thus required to undertake the September-exam tasks, even while starting with the preliminary activities for the March public exam. Teaching, the primary task of the teachers gets severely affected as a result. The supplementary examinations held in September-October should therefore be cancelled”, the Director for government examinations wrote to the Govt of TN and this has led to the present decision, the department of school education has stated.

“Students who fail in the March-April annual examination will have to face their re-examination immediately within a few months, if they are not successful in this too, they will have no option but to wait till next March” says Prince Gajendra Babu, general secretary of the state platform for public schools, and raises the question “The government examination department is not conducting the exams free of cost. When they take the fees for that, what is their problem in holding this exam also, in addition?”

“Even when the government announced that there will be common examination for the 11th standard also, the students were not given opportunity to sit for the September-October exam. If they fail to clear the subjects in the re-examination that follows in June-July, the students may be able to re-write these plus 1 papers, only along with their plus 2 exam. This means, they will have to take examination for both, the failed plus 1 papers and the entire plus 2 papers together, at the same time. This may cause severe stress to such students”, feels writer and school head master ‘Ayesha’ Natarajan.

“The system of holding immediate re-exam in June-July was introduced only with the purpose that the students who failed in 10th and plus 2 should not be kept waiting for 1 whole year. After introducing this, they have done away with the already existing September-October exam and in the process, have made the students wait several months for taking their next examination. Is this fair?” ask students, who are not very bright in studies.

“Shortage of teachers in schools may be a reason for this change; however, for addressing that problem they will have to fill teacher-posts that are lying vacant. But instead, they have simply cancelled a re-examination itself and this will definitely affect the average students and the not-so-bright ones. Before doing away with an examination-pattern in vogue for as many as 66 years, the authorities should have held extensive consultations with parents, teachers and experts in the field of education and then only taken a decision” is the feeling of some teachers.
