In a stern message to  DMK working president and brother  M K Stalin, former Union minister M K Alagiri visited the Karunanidhi Samadhi on the Marina to vent his anger against Stalinisation of the DMK in O Paneerselvam style to indicate to the DMK family that he had kept his options open, and would consider alternatives if his family did not get due representation in the new DMK team to be headed by Stalin after the death of M Karunanidhi.

OPS had chosen the Jayalalithaa Samadhi to launch his protest against V K Sasikala and her attempt to oust him from chief ministership of the State and to take over both the government and the party. In OPS style, he showed his dissent and claimed all genuine DMK workers were with him, and that “time would tell” about the future, hinting at launching his own party, if necessary.

Alagiri had already set up rebel candidates against the DMK in the 2001 Assembly elections, who secured just two to three percent votes but damaged the prospects of the DMK candidates. Alagiri was then kept out of the party and showed his ire by supporting rebels. Karunanidhi tried to salvage the situation later by bringing him back to the DMK fold and gave him posts like South Zone co-ordinator. He was given the ticket for Parliamentary elections and was appointed Union minister.

However, following differences with Stalin, Alagiri was expelled from the party in 2014.

Asked about the DMK executive committee meeting to be held on August 14, Alagiri said he could not comment as he was not part of the DMK.

Inmathi.com had reported that there were simmering differences in the Karunanidhi family over representation for them in the  DMK, and that a compromise formula was being worked out by Selvi to paper over the differences. However, it appears that Alagiri is not happy with the formula and wants better representation for his family.

Alagiri’s outburst is seen as pressure tactics to secure a better role for him and his family members in the new team of DMK post-Karunanidhi.

Alagiri was accompanied to the Samadhi by members of his family including Dayanidhi Alagiri, whose name is suggested for a post in a trust of the DMK as part of a compromise formula being initiated by Karunanidhi’s daughter M K Selvi.
