Family members of DMK President M Karunanidhi, including his sons M K Alagiri and M K Stalin, and daughter Kanimozhi, met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami at his residence in Chennai on August 7, 2018. Other senior leaders, including T R Baalu, Murasoli Selvam and I Periasamy, accompanied them.
The health condition of Karunanidhi, now undergoing treatment at the Kauvery hospital in Chennai, turned critical on August 6 night. The family members reportedly discussed arrangements to be made in view of the tense situation in front of the hospital where large crowds had gathered from this morning.
After the meeting, Chief Minister Palaniswami met PWD officials. The chief secretary, Girija Vaidyanathan, also met the CM.
Tamil Nadu’s DGP has ordered security to be strengthened across the state. In a fax message, he said, “…Please direct your strength (ADSP, DSPs, SIs & ORs) available in each district/city to report immediately in uniform before the respective COP/District SP for urgent law and order bandobustduty).”
Karunanidhi was admitted to the hospital on July 26 due to low blood pressure. He was resuscitated and his condition stabilized thereafter. The hospital stated that he had contracted urinary tract infection and had a fever because of it. He was reportedly cured of this infection. However, on August 6, Karunanidhi turned critical as the doctors reported a challenge to maintain his vital organs.
