Last year, the first year NEET was introduced, two students got admission from government schools in government medical colleges, while three got into private colleges under government quota.
In 2016, when only Plus 2 marks were considered, 30 government school students got into government medical colleges. Some 390 students from government schools and 930 students from government aided schools had qualified this year.

Among the government school students admitted was T Alex Pandian who studied in M Pudaiyur Government Mangalur Model School. He has got admission at the Tiruchi Medical College. Born in a Dalit family, he obtained 306 marks in NEET. “I studied in the Matriculation school in the neighbouring village up to the VII standard. Then, I joined in the Govt. school in my own place in VIII standard, as it had English medium classes, and secured 465 marks out of 500 in the SSLC Examination. I joined Plus One taking Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics as my subjects and stood first in school in the Plus Two Examination, securing 1111 marks out of 1200”, tells Alex.
“I joined in the NEET examination training classes conducted by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu and got training for 25 days. I secured 306 marks in the NEET Examination and obtained admission in the Govt. Medical College, Trichy”, he continues.
None of the 24,700 students who took examinations in Tamil got admission in Govt. Medical Colleges, going by the information available. There were mistakes in the NEET Tamil question papers and the Madurai branch of the High Court had awarded compassionate marks for this, to the students concerned. However, the case filed against this order is pending in the Supreme Court.
